West Coast Fossil Park, Western Cape

The West Coast Fossil Park near Langebaan north of Cape Town has one of the world’s richest concentration of fossils dating back to the early Pliocene era 5 million years ago. Once sabre-toothed cats roamed this land, along with short-necked giraffes, four-tusked elephants and strange, three-toed horses.

Five million years ago, the arid West Coast of South Africa looked exotically different to the way it looks today.  Back then, strange creatures roamed a land that was green and well-watered.

Eskom wind farm gets green light

The National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) has granted Eskom a licence for its Sere wind farm in the Western Cape, the power parastatal said.

"This is an exciting milestone in Eskom's move towards a cleaner energy mix," Eskom CEO Brian Dames said in a statement.

"Sere is our first, large-scale, renewable energy project. It demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and to investing in a sustainable energy future."

Six rhinos successfully translocated to Botswana

&Beyond has announced that six translocated rhino have been officially released into Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

Earlier this year, &Beyond decided to move the rhino from Phinda to Botswana. “Botswana has a strong security and monitoring framework in place whereby the Department of Wildlife Anti-Poaching Unit and the Botswana Defence Force help to protect the species,” said a statement by &Beyond.

SA voted top 'dream destination'

South Africa has been voted the top destination by members of the world's largest travel and lifestyle social network, Where Are You Now? (WAYN), in the site's recent "dream destination competition".

The country beat Brazil, India, Dubai, Fiji, Turkey and Indonesia with 15 300 votes from members around the world.

A total 78 000 votes were counted for all seven of the destinations. The nominated countries and cities were selected through market research and tracking user engagement on WAYN.

Rhino sold for R10m at auction

Durban - Forty white rhino have been sold for about R10m at the Ezemvelo Wildlife annual game auction in Durban, its spokesperson said on Thursday.

The average price of each rhino increased to R247 000, from R243 000 last year, said spokesperson Musa Mntambo.

He said the rhino were among 1563 animals sold for R13 605 650 at the auction, which was held at Sibaya Casino on Wednesday.

The animals included black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, giraffe, dassies, red hartebeest, impala, kudu, nyala, warthog, zebra, blesbuck and springbuck.
