Hobie Tigers Race Offshore Race

Hobie Tigers joined the Mykonos offshore race on Friday,  14 Tigers registered for the event.  We launched off Milnerton beach for an exciting downwind start in 25 knots of wind.  We immediately saw one or two casualties in the first few minutes of the race.  With spinnakers up most raced off to the shore at Big Bay.  The wind died to 4-5 knots and forced most of us to hug and work the coastline looking for a bit more wind.  The wind came up and from Koeberg the fleet split a little more, some competitors opting to go offshore while others continued to work the inshore route.  Good, steady South Westerley came through at around 10 - 12 knots.  This steady breeze made for very pleasent spinnaker sailing, although the conditions were cold.  From Yzerfontein the up to Jutten island positions did not change that much.  Upon entering the lagoon we were greeted by a solid 30 knot wind in the Lagoon.  The angle to the finish line off the breakwater at Mykonos served up a very exciting finish.  Thank you for Viking Plastics for their sponsorship of the event and we look forward to next years event.  If you would like to see the routes taken by the sailors check out this link,

Hobie Tigers Race Offshore Race

Hey, you guys are definitely not well!! That kind of race definitely needs a large keel, self-steering gear, a fridge and ice to keep the frosties cool!! I can only imagine that to do something like this on a hobby is seriously hard-core - especially the finishing breeze!! You race, I'll watch!! :)

Hobie Tiger Race

It was like being in a fridge doing the race, but it was good, the finishing breeze got the blood flowing again!!
