his weekend saw the biggest fleet in the history of the Mykonos Offshore Race from Cape Town to Langebaan. With 80 yachts crossing the start line itil test from Cape Town in good conditions, winds of 22-25 knots in Table Bay. A spectacle that will remain in my mind with 80 keel boats with their spinnakers up. The wind mcse test dropped off at Big Bay but slowly settled in from the South West all the way to Langebaan, a solid 30 knots was blowing in the Lagoon upon their arrival there. Good racing in the pursuit race on Saturday with light winds building to a mcts 70-431 good 12 knots a little later in the day. As most are aware, Bertie was the first South African to single-handedly complete three circumnavigations of the globe in 1991and was subsequently nominated to the Single-Handed Sailor's Hall of Fame in the Museum of Yachting at Newport, Rhode Island, U.S.A. He sailed a calculated 170 000 sea miles competitively, over 100 000 miles of which mcts exams were singlehanded, all of which has earned him a special honoured place among the elite of blue-water sailors around the world.
