Traffic problems with the snow

Johannesburg - Heavy snow wreaked havoc on Eastern Cape roads on Tuesday morning, with at least three accidents and several road closures reported.

"It is still snowing heavily and it is also quite rainy," said provincial traffic spokesperson Tshepo Machaea.

Several people were injured on the R58 between Barkly East and Lady Grey when a minibus taxi overturned.

"There are people injured there. Emergency services are on their way there."

Also, on the N2 between Idutywa and Mthatha a truck overturned, while a vehicle rammed into the back of a truck in Graaff-Reinet.

Machaea said he would have more details on these accidents later in the day.

The roads closed due to heavy snowfall are:

- R63 between Somerset East and Pearston at Bruintjieshoogte,

- The Nico Malan Pass between Seymour and Whittlesea,

- R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock at the Wapadsberg Pass,

- N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg at the Lootsberg Pass,

- N6 between Jamestown and Queenstown at the Penhoek pass,

- R58 between Elliot and Barkly Pass.
